Subaru of America is recalling more than 541,000 SUVs in the United States because of a printing error on a federally required certification label. The recall involves certain 2019-2026 Ascent, 2025-2026 Forester, 2025-2026 Forester Hybrid, and 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid models. While the issue is not a mechanical defect, it involves the Gross Axle Weight Rating, a figure that indicates the maximum weight each axle can safely support.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted that an incorrect weight rating could lead drivers to inadvertently overload their vehicles. Overloading a car can negatively impact handling and increase the risk of tire failure or a crash. To date, Subaru has reported no injuries or accidents linked to this labeling discrepancy.
Because the issue is limited to the information printed on the label, the remedy is straightforward. Subaru plans to mail corrected labels to affected owners, who can then apply the new sticker over the existing one on the driver-side doorjamb. Owners who prefer not to perform this task themselves may visit a local dealership to have the label installed at no cost.
Subaru expects to begin mailing notification letters to owners on August 25. In the meantime, the automaker advises drivers to exercise caution when loading their vehicles, particularly when hauling heavy gear or using roof and hitch accessories. Owners can verify if their specific vehicle is included in the recall by entering their 17-digit vehicle identification number on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or Subaru recall websites.
