The error occurred within the state's Motor Vehicle Commission system, which is designed to automatically register eligible citizens when they apply for or renew a driver's license. While the system is intended to filter out those who are not U.S. citizens, a technical glitch allowed some individuals who identified as noncitizens to be added to the voter rolls anyway.
State officials have emphasized that the vast majority of these individuals did not cast ballots. The New Jersey Division of Elections has begun the process of removing these names from the registration lists to ensure the integrity of the upcoming elections. Governor Phil Murphy’s administration stated that the issue was identified during a routine audit, which prompted an immediate review of the registration database to prevent future occurrences.
