Amazon's application to launch more than 5,000 additional satellites raises serious concerns about orbital congestion and radio interference. With SpaceX's Starlink already exceeding 5,000 functioning satellites and other constellations growing, low Earth orbit is becoming crowded. Each new satellite increases the risk of collisions and space debris, which can cascade and threaten all space operations.
Critics also worry about light pollution and its impact on astronomy. While Amazon says it will make satellites less reflective, the sheer number of spacecraft can still obscure scientific observations. Astronomers have already reported streaks in telescope images from existing constellations, and adding thousands more would worsen the problem.
From a regulatory standpoint, the FCC must ensure that Amazon's spectrum use does not interfere with existing satellite and terrestrial services. The direct-to-device model uses spectrum that is currently allocated for ground-based cellular networks. Coordinating with incumbents could be complex, and any interference could degrade service for millions of current users.
There is also the question of necessity. SpaceX and T-Mobile already plan direct-to-phone satellite service by late 2024, and AST SpaceMobile has launched test satellites. Adding Amazon's constellation may create redundancy rather than filling a genuine gap. In a market that may not support multiple networks, the risk of wasted investment and eventual orbital debris from decommissioned satellites is real.
Finally, Amazon's track record with Project Kuiper has been slower than promised, with only two prototype satellites launched so far. The company has not demonstrated the ability to deploy and operate such a large constellation. Regulators should demand clear proof of concept before granting such a large license.
