Elon Musk's xAI Sues Minnesota Over 'Nudification' Technology Law

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, has filed a federal lawsuit against the state of Minnesota over a new law that bans "nudification" technology. This technology uses AI to create fake nude images of real people. The law, set to take effect on August 1, 2026, is the first of its kind in the United States and aims to prevent the non-consensual creation and distribution of such images. xAI acknowledges the importance of protecting individuals from unauthorized explicit content but argues that the law is overly broad and infringes on constitutional rights. The company points out that the law lacks exceptions for good-faith content moderation and images created with consent. Additionally, xAI objects to the law's broad definition of "intimate parts" and the potential $500,000 fine per violation, which it considers excessively punitive. xAI emphasizes that its platform, Grok, already prohibits and enforces against misuse, utilizing technological and policy measures like geoblocking to comply with regional laws. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison defended the law, stating that AI-generated nude images without consent are exploitative and harmful. The outcome of this lawsuit could set a significant precedent for how states regulate AI use.
