In recent weeks, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained thousands of children and their sponsors following information provided by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). This development has raised significant concerns among immigrant advocacy groups and policymakers.
The ORR, responsible for the care of unaccompanied migrant children, has shared over 460,000 leads with ICE since the beginning of President Donald Trump's second term, resulting in more than 12,000 arrests.
Among those detained is Aurora, a 24-year-old mother from California. Her six-year-old daughter, who had been in a child migrant shelter for over six months, was reunited with her in late March. However, shortly after their reunion, both were detained by ICE and sent to a family detention center in Texas.
Advocates argue that these actions have a chilling effect on potential sponsors, deterring them from coming forward to care for unaccompanied minors. This reluctance has led to extended processing delays for children in shelters operated by the ORR.
The situation has prompted calls for policy changes to balance the enforcement of immigration laws with the protection and well-being of vulnerable children. As the debate continues, the future of unaccompanied migrant children in the U.S. remains uncertain.
