PJM Interconnection, the operator of the largest electrical grid in the United States, has announced a new policy to manage electricity demand by temporarily cutting power to large data centers during periods of supply shortages. The measure, which is set to take effect in June 2027, applies to facilities that consume 50 megawatts or more of electricity. This decision follows a recent capacity auction that failed to secure enough new power generation to keep pace with the rapid growth of data centers, which are increasingly essential for artificial intelligence and cloud computing services.

Under the new framework, these large-scale users will be subject to power reductions when the grid faces extreme stress. Similar to existing demand-response programs that have long been used for large industrial customers, affected data centers will receive compensation for the periods their power is curtailed. Grid operators typically provide advance notice ranging from 30 minutes to several days, depending on the severity of the forecasted demand and available supply.

This policy shift highlights the growing tension between the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure and the limitations of the nation's aging electrical grid. PJM serves approximately 67 million people across 13 states and the District of Columbia. As data centers continue to be built at a breakneck pace, grid operators are struggling to balance the needs of residential and commercial consumers with the massive energy requirements of modern computing facilities.

Industry experts suggest that this move will likely encourage data center operators to invest in their own on-site power generation to ensure continuous operations. Without such independent sources, facilities may be forced to rely on backup generators, which are often more expensive to operate and can raise environmental concerns. As the grid continues to face capacity challenges, the ability to maintain a steady power supply is becoming a critical factor in the development and operation of large-scale computing infrastructure.
