PJM Interconnection, the operator of the largest electrical grid in the United States, has announced a new policy to manage electricity demand by temporarily cutting power to large data centers during periods of supply shortages. Starting in June 2027, facilities consuming 50 megawatts or more of electricity will be subject to these planned reductions. The move is designed to prevent wider blackouts across the 13-state region, which serves approximately 67 million customers, as the grid struggles to keep pace with the rapid growth of AI and cloud computing infrastructure.

The decision follows a recent capacity auction that failed to secure enough new power generation to meet rising demand. PJM officials noted that data centers are a primary driver of this increased load, with projections suggesting that electricity consumption by these facilities could quadruple by 2035. Because building new power plants and transmission lines takes years, grid operators are increasingly forced to manage demand through programs that prioritize essential services and residential stability.

Under the new framework, data centers that are disconnected during grid stress will receive compensation, similar to existing demand-response programs used by manufacturers and other large industrial users. While the policy is intended to maintain grid reliability, it is expected to fundamentally change how data center operators approach energy procurement. Many companies are now likely to invest in on-site power generation or expanded battery storage to ensure continuous operations during periods when they are asked to disconnect from the main grid.

This shift marks a significant moment for the tech industry, as electricity access becomes conditional for facilities that have historically relied on constant, uninterrupted power. As PJM and other grid operators navigate the mismatch between rapid digital expansion and infrastructure development, the focus remains on balancing the needs of the booming AI sector with the fundamental requirement to keep the lights on for millions of households and businesses.
