Gordie Howe International Bridge Officially Opens

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, officially opened to vehicular traffic on July 27, 2026, at noon. This new six-lane bridge aims to enhance trade, tourism, and job opportunities between the United States and Canada. The project, which began in 2018, was completed at a cost of $6.4 billion CAD, fully funded by Canada. The bridge is named after Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe, who played for the Detroit Red Wings. The opening ceremony was attended by Canadian officials and members of the Howe family, marking a significant milestone in cross-border infrastructure. The bridge is expected to alleviate congestion on the existing Ambassador Bridge and improve the flow of goods and people across the border.
