Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have unveiled a new initiative aimed at accelerating home construction across Canada. The plan, known as Build Canada Homes, seeks to address the nation's housing affordability crisis by partnering with the private sector to rapidly increase the supply of affordable homes. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to make housing more accessible for Canadians.
The Build Canada Homes program focuses on three key areas:
1. **Public-Private Partnerships**: Collaborating with private developers to plan, manage, and construct new affordable housing projects, thereby expediting large-scale housing developments.
2. **Financial Support**: Providing predictable, low-cost financing to support non-market and Indigenous housing providers, facilitating the growth of affordable and community housing across the country.
3. **Innovative Construction Methods**: Encouraging the use of modern building techniques, such as factory-built and prefabricated construction, to create a new Canadian housing industry that is efficient and sustainable.
Since its launch in September 2025, Build Canada Homes has committed to over 10,000 housing units through 13 partnerships nationwide. More than 1,400 homes are already under construction or set to break ground in the coming months, with projects underway in cities like Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Gatineau, and Halifax.
This initiative is a response to the longstanding challenge of housing affordability in Canada. By increasing the supply of affordable homes, the government aims to reduce the percentage of income Canadians spend on housing, which has been a significant concern for many households.
