Rogers Sports & Media has announced the closure of six radio stations across Canada, including Vancouver's Sportsnet 650 and Calgary's Sportsnet 960. The other stations affected are 1130 NewsRadio in Vancouver, 660 NewsRadio in Calgary, 95.7 NewsRadio in Halifax, and 570 NewsRadio in Kitchener. This decision impacts approximately 80 employees. The company cited declining audience numbers and reduced advertising revenue as the primary reasons for the closures. Rogers spokesperson Zac Carreiro stated, "The media business continues to face headwinds driven by declining advertising revenue and changing audience habits. These changes are part of our plan to focus our investment in areas that will drive growth long-term." Despite these closures, Rogers will continue to operate 44 radio stations in nearly 30 communities across Canada and will invest in local news in the affected markets. The company also announced that it will continue broadcasting Vancouver Canucks games on one of its radio properties in Vancouver but will no longer produce Calgary Flames broadcasts for radio. The closures are part of a broader organizational change within Rogers Sports & Media, which includes a reduction of 230 positions across the division. The company emphasized its commitment to focusing investments in areas that will drive long-term growth.
