Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has been sentenced to three months in jail after the Delhi High Court upheld his conviction in multiple cheque bounce cases. The court criticized Yadav for repeatedly failing to honor commitments to repay debts totaling approximately ₹9 crore to Murali Projects Pvt Ltd, a Delhi-based company. Despite multiple opportunities and clear timelines, Yadav failed to honor commitments involving payments running into several crores of rupees. Even partial payments promised through demand drafts and installment schedules were not deposited within the stipulated time.
In June 2024, the trial court had suspended Yadav's sentence to facilitate a settlement between the parties. However, the High Court noted that leniency was withdrawn due to repeated breaches of undertakings by Yadav. The court emphasized that such violations could not be ignored any longer.
On February 6, 2026, Yadav surrendered to the Tihar Jail authorities after the Delhi High Court denied his plea for an extension to deposit the owed amount. The court had earlier directed him to surrender by 4 pm on February 4, 2026, but he failed to comply. The court observed that since Yadav had failed to comply with the earlier surrender order, he would be heard only after he hands himself over to the jail authorities.
Yadav's legal team had argued that he was willing to deposit ₹25 lakh immediately and that both parties had tentatively agreed on a repayment schedule for the remaining dues. However, the court declined to grant any relief, stating that there was no justification to continue leniency in a case where the petitioner himself admitted the liability.
This case highlights the serious legal consequences of dishonoring financial commitments and the judiciary's commitment to upholding the rule of law, regardless of an individual's status.
