The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart following multiple consumer complaints regarding the delivery of unsafe food products. The regulator’s action, announced on Saturday, targets alleged violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, including the supply of expired, spoiled, and contaminated items.
These notices serve as a formal inquiry into the platform's quality assurance and grievance redressal mechanisms. The FSSAI has directed the company to provide a detailed explanation and a comprehensive compliance report, warning that failure to address these concerns could lead to further legal action.
Specific complaints cited by the regulator include the delivery of rotten eggs, expired whey protein, spoiled ready-to-eat meals, and contaminated infant formula. In several instances, consumers reported that products were delivered in a deteriorated condition, emitting foul odors, and that no corrective action was taken by the platform even after the issues were escalated.
Beyond product quality, the regulator highlighted concerns regarding licensing irregularities. Observations included the marketing of products under brand names not covered by existing licenses and the listing of food business entities under names inconsistent with their official registrations.
Swiggy is now required to submit evidence of its food safety systems and steps taken to prevent the recurrence of these incidents. This development follows a separate recent regulatory matter involving Swiggy’s food delivery platform, Toing, which the company stated was an administrative licensing issue that has since been resolved.
