Assam's devastating floods have claimed 75 lives, with over 3.32 lakh people affected across seven districts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced increased compensation and intensified relief operations to assist the victims.
The floods have severely impacted regions such as Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, and Jorhat, where thousands have been displaced. In response, the state government has relaxed compensation norms, allowing families of the deceased to receive an additional Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, supplementing the existing Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia payment. Interim monetary relief is also being provided to severely affected families and students.
Rescue and relief operations are being coordinated by multiple agencies, including the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Relief camps have been established to shelter displaced individuals, and efforts are underway to restore power and repair damaged infrastructure.
The situation remains critical, with continuous rainfall expected to exacerbate conditions. Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines. The government continues to monitor the situation closely, aiming to provide further assistance as needed.
