The monsoon season has brought severe challenges to the Mumbai-Pune region, with heavy rains leading to landslides, road closures, and tragic loss of life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated spells of extremely heavy rain over the next 24 hours. The warning also included gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h, urging residents to remain cautious as monsoon activity intensifies. The government had initiated 749 landslide prevention projects since 2023, but only 440 have been completed, leaving 329 projects pending or yet to begin. This delay has left over 300 landslide-prone locations without protective measures, exposing nearly one lakh residents to potential disaster. The Geological Survey of India had recommended these mitigation measures in 2018 after assessing Mumbai's landslide-prone areas.

The monsoon season has exposed significant gaps in civic preparedness, with incidents such as tree falls, open manholes, and uncovered excavation pits leading to fatalities. These events have raised fresh questions over monsoon preparedness and public safety in Mumbai and Pune.

As the monsoon continues, authorities are urging residents to stay informed about weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel, and exercise caution, especially in areas prone to flooding and landslides. The situation remains dynamic, and ongoing efforts are being made to restore connectivity and ensure public safety.
