In a significant legal development, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has approached the Supreme Court seeking to be impleaded in the ongoing proceedings related to the tragic Karur stampede case. The incident, which occurred on September 27, 2025, during a public meeting organized by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) at Velusamypuram on the Karur–Erode highway in Tamil Nadu, resulted in the loss of 41 lives and left 142 others injured. The DMK's application, filed by its Organizing Secretary R.S. Bharathi, seeks directions against TVK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, along with other TVK ministers, including Aadhav Arjuna, Bussy Anand, and C.T. Nirmal Kumar. The DMK has urged the Supreme Court to restrain these individuals from making public statements on the merits of the pending investigation into the Karur stampede. The plea highlights concerns over statements made by TVK Minister Aadhav Arjuna, who, on July 2, 2026, allegedly remarked that Karur was "a very important town" and that there was "a score to settle." The English translation of his statement reads, "You laid your hands on our leader in Karur, didn’t you? You laid your hands on our people, Stalin." The DMK contends that such statements are intended to create a perception that the DMK and its leadership were responsible for the incident. The application also references an earlier counter-affidavit filed by the then-DMK-led Tamil Nadu government, which attributed the tragedy to factors such as under-declaration of crowd strength by TVK organizers, delayed arrival of the TVK leader, lack of basic amenities, and alleged disregard of police instructions. The DMK has urged the Supreme Court to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take action against Arjuna, as his comments amount to influencing witnesses, tampering with evidence, and impeding the probe. Notably, Arjuna himself is an accused in the criminal case registered in the wake of the Karur stampede. The application has been filed through Advocate-on-Record Anuradha Arputham. The Supreme Court had earlier ordered a CBI investigation into the stampede, observing that the tragedy had "shaken the national conscience" and warranted a fair and impartial probe. The court constituted a three-member supervisory committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, to oversee the CBI probe. The DMK's intervention in the case underscores the party's concerns over the integrity of the ongoing investigation and the potential influence of political figures on the proceedings.
