The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is grappling with a significant controversy following allegations of theft and embezzlement of donations at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. This issue has emerged as a central topic for the RSS's upcoming annual Akhil Bharatiya Prant Pracharak Baithak, scheduled from July 10 to 12 in Belagavi, Karnataka. Senior RSS functionaries have indicated that the controversy is likely to overshadow other agenda items due to its impact on the organization's public image.

The controversy began when allegations surfaced regarding the misappropriation of funds and valuables donated by devotees to the Ram Temple. An FIR was lodged on June 25, leading to the arrest of eight individuals associated with the temple's administration. Among those arrested was the former driver of Trust General Secretary Champat Rai, highlighting the involvement of individuals close to the temple's leadership. The RSS, through a statement issued by General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, condemned the incident, stating that it had "deeply hurt the sentiments and faith of the entire society and Ram devotees." The RSS emphasized the need for the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust to treat the episode as an "extraordinary matter" and take effective steps to rectify shortcomings in the temple's operations. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), a key affiliate of the RSS, has been campaigning to free Hindu temples from government control, and the alleged mismanagement at the Ram Temple has been perceived as a setback to this initiative. A senior VHP leader remarked that the campaign appears to be "caught in a dilemma" due to the incident. Opposition parties such as the Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have sought to corner the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on this issue, questioning the management and oversight of the temple's funds. The opposition parties have alleged that the BJP-led government is attempting to cover up the theft and misappropriation of donations.

The RSS's upcoming meeting in Belagavi is expected to address the Ram Temple controversy in detail. The organization aims to discuss measures to restore public confidence, including potential administrative reforms within the temple's management. The RSS has called for transparency in financial management and efficient administrative systems to ensure that the faith of devotees remains intact.

As the investigation continues, all eyes are on the developments within the RSS and the VHP, as their responses to the controversy will significantly influence the political and social discourse in the lead-up to the elections.
