The Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI) has expressed concerns regarding the inclusion of patented drugs such as bedaquiline, delamanid, and dolutegravir in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM). They emphasize the need to balance innovation incentives with affordability to ensure sustainable growth of the pharmaceutical industry.
Vivek Sehgal, Director General of OPPI, has highlighted that accounting for inflation when fixing ceiling prices for medicines is crucial. This approach would support the continued growth trajectory of the pharmaceutical sector while maintaining accessibility to essential medicines.
The OPPI advocates for a revision process that considers the economic realities faced by pharmaceutical manufacturers and promotes a sustainable environment for research and development. They also stress the importance of constructive dialogue among stakeholders to address pricing and availability challenges.
While supporting the objectives of the NLEM in improving public health outcomes, the industry perspective underscores the complexity of balancing cost, innovation, and accessibility in the list’s revision.
The final revised NLEM is expected to reflect a consensus that protects patient interests without compromising the industry’s ability to innovate and supply essential drugs effectively.
