Proton's electric vehicle (EV) lineup has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 20,000 units sold in 2026. This accomplishment underscores the growing acceptance of EVs in Malaysia and highlights Proton's expanding presence in the new energy vehicle market.
In the first half of 2026, Proton delivered over 100,000 vehicles, marking its strongest first-half sales performance in 15 years. The series, which includes both electric and plug-in hybrid models, contributed notably to this success. By June 2026, Proton deliveries had surged 321% year-on-year, reinforcing its position as Malaysia's leading EV brand.
The Proton 5, a fully electric model, remained the company's best-selling EV, with 10,793 units delivered year-to-date. The Proton 7, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), also saw strong sales, with 3,053 units sold in the same period. The introduction of the Proton 7 PHEV in February 2026 further expanded Proton's electrified vehicle offerings, catering to a broader range of consumer preferences.
To support this growth, Proton has been actively expanding its retail network. In May 2026, Pro-Net, Proton's distribution and sales arm for new energy vehicles, opened two new Proton outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Pavilion Bukit Jalil. These outlets feature Proton's new corporate identity, including updated showroom designs and digital features aimed at enhancing the customer experience. As of June 2026, Proton operates 53 sales outlets nationwide, supported by approximately 1,600 employees across sales, servicing, and administration.
Proton's commitment to expanding its EV infrastructure continued in July 2026, with the opening of 10 new outlets across Malaysia over a 10-day period. This expansion includes four Proton outlets and six Proton outlets, reflecting the company's dedication to increasing its sales, aftersales, and EV support network. The new facilities are strategically located across various regions, including the Central, Northern, Southern, East Coast, and East Malaysia regions.
Looking ahead, Proton aims to achieve its target of selling 200,000 vehicles in 2026, with the lineup playing a pivotal role in this goal. The company's ongoing investment in EV technology and infrastructure is expected to further drive the adoption of electric vehicles in Malaysia, contributing to the nation's transition towards cleaner transportation options.
