Starlink-telco partnership could improve connectivity across Malaysia

Starlink and a leading Malaysian telecommunications provider announced a partnership aimed at extending high‑speed internet to underserved parts of the country. The deal, revealed in a joint statement on Monday, will combine SpaceX’s low‑earth‑orbit satellite network with the telco’s existing mobile and fixed‑line infrastructure to deliver broadband where fibre or cable is not yet viable. Officials said the collaboration will start with pilot projects in remote villages of Sabah and Sarawak, regions that have long struggled with limited connectivity. The partnership aligns with Malaysia’s National Broadband Initiative, which targets 95% household internet penetration by 2025. By using Starlink’s satellite capacity, the telco hopes to bypass the high cost of laying new fibre in difficult terrain, while Starlink gains a local distribution partner to navigate regulatory requirements. Both parties emphasized that the service will be offered at competitive rates and will support schools, clinics and small businesses. The agreement marks the first formal cooperation between a global satellite operator and a Malaysian telco to address the digital divide.
