The Housing and Development Board (HDB) announced on July 10 that approximately 15 hectares of the 23-hectare Maju Forest in Clementi will be cleared to make way for new public housing developments. The site, which has been zoned for residential use since 1980, is bounded by Brookvale Drive, Clementi Road, and Sunset Way.
To mitigate the environmental impact, HDB will retain about 8 hectares of the forest to serve as a refuge for wildlife and to facilitate fauna movement. This preserved area includes a natural freshwater stream and vegetation identified as having high biodiversity value. The development plans also incorporate the area around the Old Jurong Railway Line, where a new 4km-long nature trail is currently being studied.
An environmental study commissioned by HDB recorded 113 fauna species within the site, including six species of conservation significance such as the buffy fish-owl and the straw-headed bulbul. To protect these animals, HDB plans to implement phased site clearance, allowing wildlife to relocate to adjacent green spaces before construction commences.
Where feasible, plants of conservation significance located in the affected zones will be salvaged before work begins. The future estate will also feature native greenery to integrate with the surrounding environment. The public can provide feedback on the environmental report via an online form until August 6.
