While the Singapore Armed Forces is making strides in AI adoption, the rapid evolution of autonomous weaponry globally raises significant concerns about whether current defensive strategies are sufficient. As adversaries increasingly deploy autonomous targeting systems that operate without human connectivity, the SAF must grapple with the reality that a human-in-the-loop requirement might become a tactical disadvantage. If an enemy can engage targets at machine speed, a military that relies on human verification may find itself outpaced and vulnerable.

Simply training existing personnel may not be enough to counter the threat of AI-driven irregular warfare. The military must ensure that its focus on technological innovation does not come at the expense of traditional combat readiness or the ability to operate in degraded environments where AI systems might fail or be jammed.
