Singapore's security cannot be left to 'just SPF and ISD': Shanmugam

Singapore's Coordinating Minister for National Security, K Shanmugam, emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to national security, stating that it cannot be solely entrusted to the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the Internal Security Department (ISD). He highlighted the importance of a vigilant society that actively participates in safeguarding the nation.

Shanmugam's remarks came in the wake of recent incidents where three teenagers were detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for planning attacks on schools. He noted that while physical security measures are essential, they must be balanced with the need for free movement and openness in public spaces. He stated, "You can't turn every school into a garrison or a cantonment, then it won't feel like a school."

The Minister also addressed the role of social media in radicalization, acknowledging that harmful content online has contributed to the radicalization of youths. He mentioned that the government is studying the best ways to protect young people from such influences.
