Singapore's hawkers and market stallholders are set to benefit from new rent support measures aimed at alleviating financial pressures. The National Environment Agency (NEA) has announced initiatives to provide rental assistance to these vendors, acknowledging the challenges they face in maintaining affordable food options for the public.
The NEA's support includes subsidized rental schemes for eligible stallholders. For instance, cooked food stallholders on the subsidized rental scheme typically pay either $192, $320, or $384 per month, depending on the scope of upgrading works carried out during the Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme at their respective hawker centres. The median rent for non-subsidised cooked food stallholders has remained relatively stable at around $1,250 per month over the last 10 years.
These measures aim to ease the financial burden on hawkers and market stallholders, enabling them to continue offering affordable and diverse food options to the community. The support is part of the government's broader efforts to sustain Singapore's hawker culture and ensure the vibrancy of hawker centres across the island.
