At the 40th anniversary conference of the People's Action Party's (PAP) youth wing, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the party's commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Addressing over 1,200 youth activists at the Young PAP YP40 festival on July 4, 2026, Wong stated that the PAP does not expect uniformity of thought within its ranks. He highlighted the importance of bringing in individuals with varied experiences, perspectives, and ideas to effectively tackle the challenges ahead. "This diversity is essential for the PAP to keep renewing itself and to continue governing well for the longer term," said Wong, who also serves as the party's Secretary-General.
Wong encouraged young Singaporeans to "widen the circle" and join the PAP, even if they do not agree with the party on every issue. He emphasized that differing views are welcomed, stating, "You do not have to agree with us on every single issue. In fact, it's the opposite." He further urged those who care deeply about Singapore's future and have ideas to improve the country to consider joining the PAP.
The Young PAP, the youth wing of the ruling party, aims to engage citizens under the age of 40. Chaired by Minister of State Alvin Tan, the wing actively gathers feedback from youth, drafts position papers on issues like climate change, and champions mental health campaigns.
Wong acknowledged the natural instinct for some young people to be drawn to the underdog and may perceive the PAP as already established and not in need of their contributions. He countered this by stating, "You may look at the PAP and think: this is already a big and established party – it does not need me... but you are mistaken."
He emphasized that Singapore, despite its achievements, remains an underdog in the global arena, competing against countries with larger populations and greater resources. Wong stressed that every generation must bring fresh ideas and a renewed sense of responsibility to move Singapore forward. He concluded by urging young Singaporeans not to lose heart, not to stand on the sidelines, and to choose to lead and take action.
The PAP's emphasis on diversity and inclusivity reflects its ongoing efforts to renew itself and remain relevant in addressing the evolving needs of Singapore's society.
