The Singapore government has unveiled plans for the third and final phase of the Cross Island Line (CRL), which will add four new underground stations to the western region of the island. Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow announced on July 31, 2026, that this 10km extension, known as CRL3, is designed to improve connectivity for residents in Taman Jurong and workers in the surrounding industrial estates. The project is expected to begin construction in 2027, with the stations targeted for completion by the late 2030s.
The new stations, currently designated as CR20 to CR23, will include two major interchange hubs. The CR21 station will connect to the upcoming Jurong Region Line and serve as a gateway to Jurong Island, while the CR23 station at Gul Circle will provide a direct link to the existing East-West Line. These additions are part of a broader effort to make the Cross Island Line a critical backbone of the national rail network, featuring 11 interchange stations that connect to all existing MRT lines.
Officials emphasized that the expansion will significantly enhance the resilience of the MRT system. By providing more interchange options, the line will allow commuters to utilize alternative routes during service disruptions, keeping them within the rail network. The Land Transport Authority and the Singapore Land Authority have confirmed that the project will require the full acquisition of seven industrial properties and the partial acquisition of eight others to facilitate construction.
To address potential community concerns, the government has committed to conducting thorough noise and vibration impact studies before any work begins. The authorities will also collaborate with local stakeholders to implement mitigation measures regarding traffic, dust, and safety throughout the construction period. Once fully operational, the Cross Island Line will span approximately 67km, becoming Singapore's longest fully underground MRT line and serving up to one million daily passengers.
