Borneo Motors, the authorized distributor for Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Singapore, has initiated a workforce reduction as part of a broader corporate restructuring exercise. Affected employees were notified on July 30, which served as their final day of employment. While the company has not disclosed the specific number of staff impacted, the move is part of an effort to streamline operations and better align the business with current market needs and future priorities.

The company, a unit of the global automotive distributor Inchcape, is currently navigating a period of leadership transition following the recent resignation of its managing director on July 21. A spokesperson for Borneo Motors stated that the organization is reviewing its structure to ensure it remains well-positioned to serve customers and brand partners effectively. The firm is working closely with the Singapore Manual and Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) to manage the transition.

To support those affected, Borneo Motors has committed to providing a retrenchment package that aligns with the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment. These guidelines typically recommend providing one month of salary for each year of service, depending on the specific collective agreement. The SMMWU has emphasized the importance of early communication in such exercises to allow workers sufficient time to prepare and access necessary support services.

This restructuring comes amid a challenging landscape for traditional automotive distributors in Singapore. The market is seeing increased competition from electric vehicle brands, particularly those from China, which are gaining traction as the nation pushes toward its decarbonization goals. As Borneo Motors adjusts its operations, the focus remains on maintaining service standards while adapting to a rapidly evolving automotive sector.
