While SpaceX celebrates its 13th Starship test flight, a growing number of experts and local residents wonder whether the pace of testing is outpacing due diligence. Each launch risks a catastrophic failure that could scatter debris over populated areas or sensitive ecosystems. The previous test ended with the vehicle breaking apart over the Caribbean, prompting the FAA to order an investigation. This flight, though successful, still produced sonic booms that rattled homes near the launch site and raised questions about the cumulative effect of repeated launches. Environmental groups have filed lawsuits over the FAA’s environmental review, arguing that the agency underestimated the impact on wildlife and air quality. The commercial space industry is not a race with a single finish line; safety and community acceptance matter as much as speed. SpaceX’s own documents show that the Starship program has generated more than 500 anomalies since its first test. While SpaceX says each anomaly is a learning opportunity, some of those anomalies could have led to loss of life if the vehicle had been crewed. NASA, which is paying SpaceX for the lunar lander, has expressed confidence but also noted that the vehicle must demonstrate extraordinary reliability before carrying astronauts. Rushing to meet political deadlines could compromise that goal. A more measured approach—with more ground testing and fewer flights—might reduce long-term risk to both people and the program’s future.
