Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been officially ruled out of the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The decision follows medical advice from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) team, which determined that the 32-year-old requires more time to fully recover from a persistent left knee injury. Bumrah, who has not bowled since the second ODI against England on July 16, will not travel with the squad for the series starting August 15 in Galle.
The injury, described as an impact issue sustained while fielding during the England series, has been managed with a long-term recovery plan that included a medical injection. After reporting to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for fitness assessments, medical staff concluded that returning to the field now could risk aggravating the injury, potentially leading to a much longer absence. The board has opted for a cautious approach, prioritizing his long-term availability over immediate participation.
This development leaves India with a significant void in its bowling attack, which is already managing several other fitness concerns. Players like Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep are also currently sidelined, placing additional pressure on team management to finalize a replacement. While no official replacement has been named yet, the selection committee is expected to announce a successor shortly to bolster the squad ahead of the tour.
