A 73-year-old taxi driver has died after losing consciousness while operating his vehicle on the East Coast Parkway (ECP) on July 6. The incident, which occurred while the driver was transporting a woman and her young son, prompted an emergency response and has since become the subject of an ongoing police investigation.
The driver became unresponsive while traveling toward the Marina Coastal Expressway at approximately 12:50 p.m. According to the passenger, 36-year-old Winnie Lee, the taxi began veering toward the road shoulder, with the vehicle brushing against roadside vegetation. When Ms. Lee attempted to communicate with the driver, he appeared confused before losing consciousness entirely.
In a bid to stop the moving vehicle, Ms. Lee opened the passenger door and maneuvered it against the road divider to create friction. The taxi eventually came to a gradual halt, allowing Ms. Lee and her six-year-old son to exit safely with the assistance of a passerby. Emergency services were alerted shortly thereafter, and the driver was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital in an unconscious state.
Authorities confirmed the driver’s death on July 10. While the exact medical cause of the incident remains under investigation, the event has highlighted the risks associated with medical emergencies occurring behind the wheel. ComfortDelGro, the taxi operator, has been notified of the fatality as police continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
