Shanmugam remains as Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, now also serving as Senior Minister. Ng Chee Meng returns to the Cabinet as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, focusing on workforce and economic challenges.
Analysts interpret these changes as a deliberate effort to groom the fifth-generation (5G) leadership team while leveraging the experience of the fourth-generation (4G) leaders. This approach aims to provide a longer development period for emerging leaders to gain necessary experience.
The reshuffle also addresses recent political resignations, including that of Associate Professor Faishal Ibrahim, who stepped down over a lapse in judgment. The new appointments are set to take effect progressively from July 27.
